Want to be a Paranormal Investigator? Some things you should know before you grab your camera Does the paranormal interest you? Have you had several experiences and want justification? Got a camera and ready to start snapping photos like crazy? Here’s some things to think about: Paranormal Investigating isn’t for everyone. We put ourselves in situations that have others creeped out of their minds. Yet, we love what we do and have a strong passion for it. Majority of us have had personal experiences. Some have been good and others bad. Yet, we keep coming back and trying like hell to gather as much evidence as possible. If you are in this for the money, you should look elsewhere. Majority of paranormal groups are non-profit and the positions are volunteer. Equipment is expensive. I would say that this hobby is by far one of the most expensive I have seen. If you add up the costs to have a reputable group, you’re probably looking at over $10,000 in equipment, supplies, office stuff (yes, we have forms and more forms to fill out!). That is of course not counting gas prices, food and lodging, etc. Now, I am not trying to rain on anyone’s parade, but it is important to note these few things. After all… not everyone is cut out for this type of thing.♦

An Investigators Guide What is that clear circle doing in this photo? I am sure you have asked yourself that several times. As Investigators we have to be open to the possibility that an “orb” may be something paranormal. Or is it? Generally speaking, an orb should be perfectly round, emit it’s own light, and follow it’s own path. Then again, bugs do the same thing as well as dust. So how can you really know what you’re looking at is something paranormal? You can’t. DSGH never uses orbs as evidence of the paranormal. And I don’t believe any other group should either. What you can do with orbs is use them as an aid to gather “real” evidence. In which case, a lot of groups do use them in that way. When people send me pictures of orbs and claim that they are paranormal, it makes me cringe. This is because for so long, many groups have gotten away with claiming this phenomena (or it could just be dust) as paranormal activity. Shame on you!♦ We are not a bunch of hyped up teenagers! It is just one of those things that gets to the Paranormal Community. A bunch of teenagers (or highly immature adults) decide they are going to go “ghost busting”. They make a circus of themselves, get kicked out of a local Starbucks (yeah, it really happened), and give the rest of us horrible reputations! ARGH! I understand how the SciFi Channel and TAPS has everyone thinking they are going to some how become millionaires, hunt ghosts and get that adrenaline rush. However, the reputable groups have some sort of education backing them. They have invested time and money to further their education in the Paranormal and will show certification on demand. You need to be very careful about who you let into your home or business. Ask for certification! Research the group, contact their references. Ask questions…. A LOT OF THEM! We rely heavily on our clients trust, and when someone breaks that trust or gives our groups a bad reputation, it hurts. Not only does it stop us from actively investigating, but it hurts emotionally because this is not just a hobby, it’s a passion! Checklist for contacting a paranormal group Check out their evidence – is it solid? Do they use a bunch of orbs? Do they have a Client Agreement? What are their Team Member Guidelines? Are references listed? If so, contact them Do they charge a fee? Remember, majority of groups do not charge a fee EVER. Have they done many investigations that relate to what you are experiencing? These are just a few guidelines for you to work with. Remember, these are strangers that you will be allowing in your home or business. If a group is reputable, they will provide you with any information that you request. You are asking us for our services, and you should always be cautious when looking for a group to suit your needs.♦ Important News from DSGH! On October 15, 2008 I was on XZONE Radio talking about the paranormal and our group “Dirty South Ghost Hunters”. I had a great time discussing this with Rob McConnell, the host for XZONE Radio. You can listen to the conversation on their website at www.xzone-radio.com. I look forward to other opportunities to discuss the paranormal and spread the word about DSGH. I would like to thank our Investigator-In-Training Pattie Freeman for suggesting our group to be on XZONE Radio, as well at Rob McConnell.
